How to Use AI to Cut Your Internet Bill by $25 a Month
The retention department has a script. Now so do you.
What happened
Business Insider reported last month on an engineer at the software company Datadog who had a rival fiber offer of $50 a month in hand and a Verizon bill of $94.99. Rather than sit through the live chat himself, he had a ChatGPT agent do the haggling. By his account the bill came down to $69.99 a month, plus a one-time $47.50 loyalty credit, which he puts at $347.50 over a year.
The same piece describes a second person who used more technical AI agent tools to claim $73 in United credits after fares dropped on flights already booked. Both are individual accounts, and both people are comfortable with tech. But the part that did the work isn't technical at all: a real competing offer and a polite, persistent ask.
You don't need an agent to get most of the benefit. A chatbot can write your script, tell you what to ask for and keep you from caving on the first "that's the best we can do."
What to do
- Find your leverage. Look up what a competitor charges new customers at your address. A real, specific offer is what moved the needle in this story.
- Pull your current bill. Note the monthly total, what's included, and how long you've been a customer.
- Have a chatbot write your script. Use the prompt below. Ask it for an opening line, a fallback ask and a polite way to say you'll cancel.
- Ask for retention or loyalty offers by name. On chat or by phone. If the first answer is no, ask whether there's a loyalty credit or a different plan at the same speed.
- Get it in writing. Save the chat transcript or ask for a confirmation email showing the new price and how long it lasts.
The prompt
I want to lower my internet bill without losing speed. I pay [current monthly price] to [provider] for [plan/speed] and have been a customer for [years]. A competitor, [competitor], offers [offer details] at my address. Write me a short, polite script for the provider's live chat: an opening message, what to ask for, two follow-up replies if they say no, and a calm line saying I'm prepared to switch. Remind me to ask for any loyalty credit and to get the final price confirmed in writing.
If you use an AI agent to run the chat, stay with it and don't let it accept a contract, plan change or new equipment without you.
Where it still needs a grown-up
- Only bluff about switching if you're actually willing to switch. Sometimes they let you go.
- Promotional prices expire. Put a reminder on your calendar for the month the new rate ends.
- Don't give a chatbot your account password or full account number. If you let an agent sign in for you, use a tool you trust and change the password afterward if you're unsure.
The verdict
The robot doesn't mind being put on hold. That alone is worth something.
